| A 'spinet' piano is the shortest piano made and is considered an adequate 'starter piano'. They range in height from 36” to 39”. The “drop” action of a spinet piano is different from any other vertical piano. Because of it's inverted mechanism design, a spinet requires more moving parts and 'reverse leverage', which results in a harder touch at the back of the keys and an easier touch at the front of the keys. They do fit nicely under a window for rooms which don't offer other placement options, and usually offer a good value from a price standpoint.
For better tone and more controllable touch, consider a 'console' piano. Sizes range in height from 40” to 44”, and have the same size footprint and width as spinets. Consoles are much more even to the touch - anywhere on the key - making good technique easier to achieve, and therefore are commonly recommended over a spinet by most music educators. Additionally, taller pianos have a larger soundboard and longer strings resulting in a much richer, fuller, more pleasing sound than a spinet can offer.
